As one of around 40 exhibition venues, the Kunsthaus Hamburg is offering free admission on Reformation Day, inviting visitors to experience the city’s cultural diversity.

At the Kunsthaus Hamburg, visitors can immerse themselves in the exhibition Temper by Yalda Afsah. On display are three films from the artist’s latest series, in which she explores universal questions of community through various rituals. While JARRAMPLAS follows a ritual in the Spanish mountain village of Piornal as an ambivalent interplay of collective aggression, PAN unfolds as a multi-layered choreography blending spirituality, physical discipline and community in the Bulgarian Rila Mountains. Yalda Afsah’s new film HEAT is devoted to the Taiwanese Bombing of Master Handan Festival. Here, the artist turns her attention to an ecstatic ceremony that combines an affirmation of faith, a test of courage and ritual purification.

From 2 pm to 4 pm, visitors can get creative themselves in the foyer. The open workshop A Ritual for ... invites participants to reflect on which rituals shape our everyday lives and our coexistence – and which ones might still need to be invented. Which actions do we repeat? What gives us a sense of stability? What connects us to others? And what new rituals might be helpful to foster social harmony? Using a variety of materials, participants will create small cards, which can serve as reminders of these rituals. They can be taken home or given as gifts. Anyone who wishes to do so can leave their own ritual at the Kunsthaus and take another one home in its place. In this way, a growing archive will emerge over the course of the day.

Also in the foyer, visitors have the unique opportunity to take home a piece of the Kunsthaus’s history, spanning over 60 years. Exhibitions leave their mark: materials, printed matter, publications and items that were once part of productions and processes at the Kunsthaus. Before the institution temporarily moves to another location next year, some of these items are to be put back into circulation. At #seeforfree, we will give away some items from our archive and invite you to take them away, pass them on and reuse them.
