In addition to sharing premises with the association Ateliers für die Kunst e. V., we regularly organize cultural policy events and symposia together. Since 1990, they have been dedicated to improving working conditions in the visual arts by pooling information related to studio spaces, grants and other cultural policy developments, making this information readily accessible and providing advisory support to artists. The main focus of the association’s work lies on providing and maintaining affordable studio space.
Network
Networking and building alliances not only broaden our horizons, but also strengthen cultural work on a long-term basis. This is why we actively maintain close ties with local institutions, initiatives and cultural players. We are committed to fostering dialogue within the city and also at the international level, bringing people together and ensuring that cultural policy actors have a voice and visibility.

Professional Association of Visual artists Hamburg
The Professional Association of Visual Artists Hamburg, who initiated the founding of the institution, has been firmly linked with the Kunsthaus from the very beginning. Today, the BBK Hamburg is one of the associates of Kunsthaus Hamburg gGmbH and holds its annual members’ exhibition there. The association’s office is also based at the Kunsthaus.
The Professional Association of Visual Artists represents the specific interests of professional visual artists both regionally and nationwide. It offers its members a range of information on legal matters and contributes to the strengthening of Hamburg’s art scene through regular internal newsletters with current calls for entries, competitions, art prizes and exhibitions.

Neue Kunst in Hamburg e. V.
Founded in 1986, the association Neue Kunst in Hamburg has, since 1997, been awarding travel grants bi-annually to five artists living and working in the greater Hamburg area. The objective is to enable artists under the age of forty to spend five months abroad, with a view to gaining new experiences, finding artistic inspiration and establishing international contacts. The association Neue Kunst in Hamburg is an associate in Kunsthaus Hamburg gGmbH.
para-education
The non-profit association para-education was founded in autumn 2024 by artists, educators and curators. Its focus is on art education in public spaces and cultural institutions in the form of projects, consultancy, events and publications. The association’s first project is the ReferenzBibliothek zur Kunst im öffentlichen Raum, initiated by the City Curator and developed in cooperation with the Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media and the Kunsthaus Hamburg. An initial selection of resources is publicly accessible in the foyer of the Kunsthaus.
City Curator Hamburg
The Kunsthaus is the backing institution for the project City Curator, an independent curatorial format for public art. Its aim is to heighten public awareness for Hamburg’s art collection in the urban environment via temporary artistic interventions, while also addressing relevant social and political issues in the scope of exhibitions in public spaces. City Curator Hamburg was launched in 2014 by the Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media and has been a part of Kunsthaus Hamburg since 2024. This institutional affiliation is intended to ensure the project’s continuity, given that its leadership changes every five years, and providing reliable resources and stable structures upon which to build.
In 2024, Joanna Warsza was appointed City Curator. Under her direction, the underlying concept is to provide a bridging platform between the many different “Hamburgs”, bringing together the local and the international, the inner and the outer, and the highs and lows of public life.
