Maik Gräf and Lulu MacDonald, KATABASIS, 2025
In their collaborative work KATABASIS (2025), grantees Lulu MacDonald and Maik Gräf embark on a joint journey to the depths of the sea. Building on this shared artistic practice, Building Invisible Images explores the tension between visibility and invisibility, light and darkness, positive and negative. The workshop invites participants to get creative themselves and to use chemicals and photographic materials to develop abstract images.
At the intersection of sculpture, photography and painting, the artists, together with the participants, explore the many layers of darkness and what emerges in the spaces in between. They experiment with the interaction of photosensitive layers, light and chemical processes, observing how materials change, how traces emerge and how forms only take shape through the interplay of different influences. This interaction gives rise to new visual worlds that move out of darkness towards visibility, encouraging reflection on fluidity and simultaneity.
