Space for Everyone?

In the area surrounding Hamburg's central station, issues relating to housing and homelessness, mental health, addiction, migration, social inclusion and public space collide with particular intensity. The symposium opened up new perspectives on responsibility and urban design, thereby relating to Daniel Hopp’s exhibition Fictional Healing, for which the artist developed docu-fictional film scenes in dialogue with people affected by addiction. The talk focused on interdisciplinary exchange between design, social work, civil society practice and research. Social designer Felix Egle, artist Daniel Hopp and Christine Tügel, chair of Jugendhilfe e. V. – the organisation behind Hamburg’s Drob Inn – discussed how public space includes or excludes people – through architecture, planning, institutional structures and social narratives.
