Historjá – Stitches from Sapmí, by Thomas Jackson, 2022

As part of a cooperation with Hamburg's Abaton Kino, the film Historjá - Stiches for Sápmi is part of the cinema's program in September. Katja Schroeder, one of the curators of the exhibition SPEAKING BACK, which is on view at the Kunsthaus Hamburg until October 1, will give a short introduction before the film starts.

The film Historjá - Stiches for Sápmi is based on a textile artwork by Britta Marakatt-Labba, who is represented in the exhibition SPEAKING BACK at the Kunsthaus Hamburg with four works.

"The embroidery, which depicts motifs from Sami history, is also the starting point for Thomas Jackson's documentary film, which tells of a Sami culture whose history is marked by the struggle against the majority society. The struggle was about the right to land and livelihood, but basically also about two different views of humans and their relationship to nature. In Historjá – Stitches for Sápmí, historical events and mythological images are interwoven to show how climate change threatens today's reindeer herding and thus the existence of Sami culture," Tobias Åkesson said about the film in the 2022 Gothenburg Film Festival catalog.

The film by Thomas Jackson and Britta Marakatt-Labba has won several Swedish (and many international) film awards. At the Swedish "Guldbagge" awards in January, it was awarded the best Best Documentary and for its music. Recently, it has also received the Swedish TV award "Kristallen" in the category documentary.
