17-year-old Ada’s parents want her to marry into a rich family. Actually, however, she is in love with the worker Souleiman, who finds himself in an increasingly financially dire situation. For months, the workers have not been paid for the construction of a luxury high-rise building in a suburb of Dakar. The circumstances become progressively precarious and Souleiman, hoping for a better future, decides to cross the sea to Europe with his colleagues. After some time, rumours circulate around the town that the group did not survived the journey across the sea. But Ada and the residents are experiencing increasingly mysterious occurrences. Has Souleiman returned after all?

In her haunting film debut, French-Senegalese filmmaker and actress Mati Diop combines love story, myth and social study. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix.

The screening is part of a collaboration between the Kunsthaus Hamburg and the Metropolis Kino as part of the exhibition Over Land and Sea. The joint film programme ties in with the themes of the group exhibition, which tells of the migrant history of humanity, its present and future. In a tension between the tangible and the mythical, the animate and the industrial world, the works on display point to the vulnerability of human beings and, simultaneously, their inherent ability to change and transform. They encourage a humanistic reflection on the way we live today.
