hosted by Kunsthaus Hamburg

Wednesday, 3 January 2024, 7 pm

Part 1: Spréchstunde with Melanie Reichert (Philosopher, University Kiel): Schiller, NEUSPRÉCH und das bürgerliche Verstehen
Part 2: Spréchstunde with Gabriela Guimarães: Bonjour Madam (video screening, 21.40 min)

Reflecting on the NEUSPRÈCH exhibition at the Klassik Stiftung, Weimar (2022) and the corresponding magazine Kunst widerspricht, together with cultural philosopher Melanie Reichert, Oliver Ross and Simon Starke discuss Schiller, NEUSPRÉCH und das bürgerliche Verstehen. With reference to Friedrich Schiller’s letters On the Aesthetic Education of Man, they will think about NEUSPRÉCH’s self-image and the relationship between art and philosophy, touching upon the question how much commentary art requires.

Following the discussion, the film Bonjour Madame by artist Gabriela Guimarães will be screened. Taking the form of an imaginary television show, whose host is the character Ruth, she deals with colonialism and pop culture, operating at the intersection of reality and fiction, the public and the private.

Melanie Reichert is a researcher at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Kiel, specializing in cultural philosophy. She is also the deputy director at the Institute for Philosophy, Psychoanalysis and Cultural Studies (IPPK), Berlin.

Gabriela Guimarães is an author and artist, who studied German literature at the UFMG in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Using various media – from photography, performance and film to assemblage, installation and literary text – she develops narratives that focus on the dialog between the everyday and personal experiences, constantly exploring the boundaries between reality and fiction.

NEUSPRÉCH was conceived by the Hamburg based artists Oliver Ross and Simon Starke. It has prior been shown at Centre for Artists‘ Publications, Weserburg Museum für moderne Kunst, Bremen (2020) and at Klassik Stiftung, Weimar (2022).
