Reading and talk with Lubi Barre
Wednesday, 26.2.2025, 7 pm
Free admission
The talk will be in English.
Lubi Barre’s work, rooted in personal narratives of migration, motherhood and cultural identity, explores the thresholds between belonging and alienation, private and public, personal and political. In the frame of the annual exhibition of the Professional Association of Visual Artists Hamburg, she reflects on what happens right in front of our door and questions what divides us and what connects us.
Moderated by Christine Brey, who brings her own artistic perspective to the conversation, the discussion will explore where art and literature intersect to engage with pressing societal issues. The reading from her essays, poems and prose texts will be intertwined with a dialogue about the metaphor of the ‘door’ as a symbol for barriers and bridges. Together, Barre and Brey will discuss themes such as protest, transformation, and the urgency of the “here and now,” inviting the audience to reflect on how personal stories and creative practices can inspire change in our shared environments. A book display with texts by Lubi Barre will be available.
Lubi Barre (*1982, Paris) grew up in Somalia and the USA. Her poems and short stories explore the complexity of cultural hybridity, the tensions between personal and collective histories, and the emotional landscapes of those who move in multiple worlds. She also explores themes of gender, family and intergenerational trauma, particularly in relation to Somali diasporic experiences. Lubi Barre lives in Hamburg and is co-organiser of the independent reading series AHAB and director of Factory Hammerbrooklyn.
