The finale of the anniversary project Once in a Blue Moon will be a symposium on the relevance of the visual arts in Hamburg, organized in cooperation with the Professional Association of Visual Artists (BBK) and Ateliers für die Kunst (AfdK). In the context of three panels accompanied by short keynote speeches, we will talk with cultural actors and decision-makers about the importance of art institutions and culture-integrative urban development for a vibrant society and cultural scene as well as the position of the Kunsthaus Hamburg in the citiy’s cultural landscape. In order to facilitate a continuous dialogue, an event of this kind will from now on take place annually at the Kunsthaus.

Moderation: Christoph Twickel (Journalist and writer)

Panel I – On the Significance of Visual Arts in Hamburg

With its institutions, galleries, off-spaces and the University of Fine Arts, the city of Hamburg has a diverse art scene with a long tradition. However, for many artists, the city is not attractive as a place to live and work in the long term. Against this backdrop, we want to ask what distinguishes Hamburg as an art location historically and currently and how structures can be expanded sustainably and beyond the region.

Impulse (5–10 min): Sven Christian Schuch (Artistic Director spce | Muthesius, Kiel)

Talking about challenges and opportunities: Melike Bilir (Gallerist and Artistic Director Hajusom e.V.), Martin Köttering (President HFBK Hamburg), Bianca Müllner (Artist and former board member BBK Hamburg) and Inga Wellmann (Head of the Department of Art, Literature and Creative Industries, Ministry of Culture and Media)

Panel II – Culture-integrative Urban Development

In view of the continuing loss of available space for many art and culture professionals, the panel will examine the current urban development in Hamburg with regard to cultural policy. The focus will be on the question of how culture can open up and secure spaces in order to shape the city in a just way, in line with common welfare and beyond profit orientation. What can sustainable organisational forms and structures look like so that this can succeed?

Impulses (5–10 min each): Christine Ebeling (Artist & Speaker Gängeviertel e.V.), Julia Marie Englert (Board Member Hallo: Verein zur Förderung raumöffnender Kultur e.V.), Theresa Michel (Curator, Imagine the City) and Merlin Reichart (Artist)

Talking about potentials and perspectives: Norbert Hackbusch (Member of the Hamburg Parliament and Spokesperson for Port, Culture, Media and Public Enterprises, DIE LINKE), Sylvia Henze (Artist and Chairperson of Ateliers für die Kunst), Fritjof Kunze (Project Development Real Estate) and Hape Schneider (Coloured Fields GmbH)

Panel III – Self-positioning of Kunsthaus Hamburg

The Kunsthaus Hamburg is a centre for contemporary art founded on the initiative of regional artists. Our central task has been to provide an inviting, open and globally networking platform for them. Originally located in its own building, the Kunsthaus moved to its current location on Klosterwall after the former was demolished in 1993. Another move is planned for the next few years. We want to take the current 60th anniversary and the prospect of another move as an opportunity to reflect and dare to look ahead.

Impulse (5–10 min): Dirk Dobke (Managing Director Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg e.V., Associate Kunsthaus Hamburg)

Talking about the past and the future: Mike Keller (Manager and Sustainability Management, Markthalle), Anna Nowak (Managing and Artistic Director Kunsthaus Hamburg) and Jan Störmer (Architect, formerly Störmer Murphy and Partners)
