In her lecture, the philosopher and performer Luce deLire will present her current scientific positions on shadow democracies and queer hospitality. Afterwards, she will talk to artist Lila-Zoé Krauß about social norms, progressive queer politics and their role in her current exhibition [After her Destruction].

According to deLire, a double movement could be observed in recent years: legislation is retreating behind courts and individual responsibility. At the same time, it is creating sub-legislative but effective standards. According to deLire, this results in a de-politicisation of politics in the light of a shadow democracy. In her lecture, deLire illustrates the logic of this shadow democracy and its authoritarian tendency, using the example of trans politics. In doing so, she addresses the so-called “self-determination law” (Sebstbestimmungsgesetz)—a German law which is intended to simplify the changing of names and gender entries in official documents—linking it to the inarticulability of a radical politics of the many in Germany.

From a postcolonial perspective, deLire proposes queer hospitality as a paradigm of creative democracy that can help us prevent our shadow democracy from collapsing into fascism. According to deLire, hospitality can help us to overcome the shadow democracy in favour of a society characterised by euphoria and enthusiasm. According to deLire, shaping this creative democracy is an artistic, performative, choreographic, architectural task. The same applies to anti-fascist practice.
