The exhibition Between Stars and Signals focuses on various cultural techniques of navigation and localization. The medium of the map, whether analogue or digital, plays an important role in this. The workshop Down to Earth, developed and organized by geographers and cartographers from the universities of Hamburg and Münster, uses the approach of Critical Cartography to respond to the themes of the exhibition.

Critical Cartography understands mapmaking as a powerful, often Eurocentric practice. Based on this conviction, it proposes alternative mappings in order to open up new perspectives. After a theoretical introduction, participants can create a personal poetic logbook. In particular, the question of what kind of navigation systems we need for a world in which we want to establish collective action, care and justice as central points of orientation will be explored. Participants will be asked to consciously locate themselves on Earth, to visualize and reflect on their own perspectives and to try out creative ways of orientation based on a networked perspective. The programme is open to all ages, no prior knowledge is required.
