Channel Sundays – Christina Werner
hosted by Kunsthaus Hamburg

Channel Sundays is a series of seven public events, for artistic exchange and experimentation that takes place independently from the exhibitions at Kunsthaus Hamburg. Each session will host the work of one or two artists on a Sunday afternoon. The series is initiated by Joscha Schell and originally took place in his studio in Harburg. In October and November 2016 the events will be hosted by Kunsthaus Hamburg. Channel Sundays is made possible by the kind support of the Cultural Department of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Christina Werner’s practice is engaged with questions concerning identity and the politics of history. In her photographic studies she observes and comments about current political tendencies and critically reflects upon the rise of right-wing movements in Europe and worldwide. Her focus is on public space and media, which she formally analyses and transforms both structurally and aesthetically.

For Channel Sundays she will present her recent project as a work in progress. In Summer 2016, Christina Werner travelled to New York in order to conduct research at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. She visited the site where the terrorist attacks took place on the 11th of September 2001 and asked questions regarding representation, commemorative culture and transformation of public space.
In addition to a presentation of selected photographs and a video work, she will talk about her journey with Joscha Schell and discuss her artistic strategies in the field of politics.

Christina Werner (*1976) lives and works in Vienna. Her work “The Boys are Back” is currently touring through Europe as part of the European Photo Exhibition Award 03. More of Werner’s works were recently on display at HGB Galerie, Leipzig (2016), at Kunstraum Lakeside, Klagenfurt (2016) and at National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung (2016, upcoming). In 2016 she has received a grant for artistic photography by the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria.
