In conversation with juror and artist Christine Brey, Florian Reckert and Katja Windau, two participants in the annual exhibition of the Professional Association of Visual Artists, provide insights into the motivation and creative process of their works and reflect from different perspectives on the living and working conditions of artists and cultural workers in light of the events ‘in front of my door’.

Under the title Vor meiner Tür, this year’s annual exhibition of the BBK Hamburg shows what artists from the city observe in the media and in their immediate surroundings and what inspires them to reflect. In the exhibition, artists reflect on current social developments and examine their historical, cultural and social contexts. The title refers to the two sides of a door: when closed, it separates what is in front of it from what is behind it; when open, it invites dialogue and a change of perspective.

Florian Reckert (*1964, List, Sylt) lives and works as a freelance graphic designer, transformation artist, photographer, sound hobbyist, ornithologist and author in Hamburg. Since 1985, he has participated in numerous exhibitions and projects, including documenta Kassel, Woche der bildenden Kunst Hamburg, Ars Electronica Linz, Triennale der Photographie Hamburg and the Museum für Kommunikation Berlin. He has also repeatedly worked as an avifaunistic mapper, contributing to the creation of species conservation reports.

Katja Windau (*1972, Cuxhaven), lives and works in Hamburg. She studied at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg. Her artistic interest lies in social contexts in which structures shaped by power imbalances are revealed. As a multimedia artist, she works with sculptural, installation and performance. She uses various materials such as sheep’s wool, textiles, sand, mortar or papier-mâché, but also photography, video, drawing and digital painting.
