The fourth season of Hamburg’s architecture and urban discourse StadtBauKunst focuses on the diverse relationships between art, architecture and the city. On four evenings, two internationally renowned architects will present their work and positions. The aim is to initiate a forward-looking discourse that links urban planning, architectural, and artistic issues and takes an integrated view of the interactions between artistic and social content. At the Kunsthaus Hamburg, Francesca Torzo from Genoa and Gustav Düsing from Berlin will present and discuss their work.

The event series is conceived and organized by the Fritz Schumacher Society and inspired by Schumacher’s work as an architect and urban planner, who always pursued a connection between social and artistic aspects.

„Nur wenn wir lernen, die Stadt (…) als Gemeingut zu betrachten, und nicht nur zu betrachten, sondern auch zu behandeln, können wir künstlerisch und können wir sozial die Probleme zu lösen beginnen, die sie uns stellt“.
aus: Fritz Schumacher, Sozialer Städtebau, 1919

The Fritz Schumacher Society sees itself as an association for the promotion of building culture. It preserves and communicates the ideas and architectural legacy of the architect, urban planner and former Hamburg Chief Building Director Fritz Schumacher (1869-1947). Inspired by his thinking, we take an interdisciplinary view on the future of the city as a cultural and living space and initiate a considered discourse on current issues of architecture and urbanism. The Fritz Schumacher Gesellschaft has been organized on a voluntary basis since 1994 and is independent of political and professional constraints; it is supported by the personal commitment of around 100 members and their enthusiasm for high-quality and forward-thinking architecture and urban space.
