V., the Kunsthaus exhibition hall will be transformed into an open printing workshop for a fortnight.

Griffelkunst publishes editions of original graphic artworks and multiples, and makes them available to its numerous members. The association thereby contributes significantly to broadening participation in art and, likewise, to promoting artists and the medium of printmaking. Our intention is to honour this special commitment with a participatory project.

We have invited three nationally and internationally renowned artists to design motifs specifically for this occasion. At the Kunsthaus, visitors will have the unique opportunity to transfer these motifs to paper themselves and thus become the owner of their personal print. Under guidance they can find out more about the traditional technique of woodblock printing and try it out. The newly created prints remain on site for the duration of the project, to dry and become part of the exhibition before they can be collected by their owners at the end of the project. As a result, the entire printing process along with the graphical versatility of the medium is rendered visible.

The programme is complemented by a special exhibition that blurs the boundaries between production, collecting and curating: Hamburg artists, some of whom have themselves previously created an edition for Griffelkunst, were invited to contribute favourite pieces from their private collections to the presentation. Based on these works, the exhibition provides an intimate insight into the collecting practices of those involved and at the same time offers an impressive overview of Griffelkunst’s many years of work.

The project is being realized in close cooperation with Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg e. V. and the printing workshop of HAW Hamburg under the direction of Professor Ellen Sturm.

[13
