Sand is like the skeleton of the world, a foundation of modern culture and technologies, the invisible but essential ingredient of constructed living environments and digital communication devices. For its extraction, entire beaches are hauled away, seabeds are sucked out, gigantic pits are dug out, mountains are piled up. Wars are waged, villages sink into the ground and islands are washed over by the sea.
