CHANNEL SUNDAYS – Jens Franke
hosted by Kunsthaus Hamburg

“Hamburg-Altona on the 25th of January 2015: Ikea Altona has become public space. The amount of daily visitors of the first inner city Ikea store is far higher than in other Ikea branches. Even though the amount of daily visitors is significantly greater in Hamburg-Altona, the sales are far lower compared to other stores nationwide. Seldomly People buy furniture. Instead local residents drive their car up and down the ramp of the car park to calm their children, or drop them off at Småland the free supervised play area in order to go shopping at the farmers market nearby. Free wifi, the empty car park with a scenic view of the city and the cafeteria are appreciated by neighbours and pedestrians. The metal construction of lamellas makes the facade of the building shift from white to yellow and vice versa while walking past. On a different note: 96 days earlier, on October 21st 2014 the Chinese President spoke out against the rising amount of strange looking buildings in China while giving a speech at a literature symposium in Beijing.”

Jens Franke has been collecting architectural and urban phenomenons that speak about a looming future. The collection consist of texts, images and interviews. At Channel Sundays he will read excerpts of his forthcoming book and screen a rough cut of the first interview:

Jens Franke (*1986) lives and works in Hamburg and Berlin. He graduated from University of Fine Arts, Hamburg (HFBK) in 2014.

Channel Sundays is a series of seven public events, for artistic exchange and experimentation that takes place independently from the exhibitions at Kunsthaus Hamburg. Each session will host the work of one or two artists on a Sunday afternoon. The series is initiated by Joscha Schell and originally took place in his studio in Harburg. In October and November 2016 the events will be hosted by Kunsthaus Hamburg. Channel Sundays is made possible by the kind support of the Cultural Department of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
